Volvo provides some of the best warranties in the car business. A few years back, they started offering lifetime warranties for labor and replacement parts. Now you can add free towing to your vehicle, no matter how old it is.

If you currently drive a 1960s Volvo, no worries; you are still eligible. As long as you can call for help, Volvo customer care will send someone to get you on the side of the road. There are never any questions and no payment required.

Complimentary Tow for Life is the name of the new program. It works for every Volvo driver, anywhere in the United States.

How To Get Your Free Towing

If you drive a Volvo and find yourself stranded, simply call Volvo customer care. You can dial 1-800-550-5658 or use the Volvo On-Call service in your new vehicle. Then, you receive a free tow to the nearest Volvo center that participates in the program.

I wonder how well this would have been for Irv Gordon. If you remember, we told you about him in our car milestones article. Mr. Gordon was able to rack up more than three million miles on his 1966 Volvo P1800. We imagine that he probably needed a lot of tow trucks along the way.

It should come as no surprise that Volvo continues to offer innovative ways to keep drivers and passengers safe. After all, they did invent the three-point seat belt. Now, the Swedish company announced that they are fighting back against speeding. To do this, Volvo limits top speed to 112 mph on future cars.

Volvo Limits Top Speed Starting in 2020

Starting in 2020, all production of Volvo cars will feature a 112 mph top speed. This means all 2021 model cars will have this feature, other than police cars. What we aren’t sure about is whether or not the Polestar vehicles will also contain this change. We don’t know what will happen overseas. In particular, Germans are used to traveling the unrestricted section of the Autobahn.

The Vision 2020 safety program hopes to aid in zero fatalities and serious injuries as a result of crashing a new Volvo. Of course, we believe most accidents occur at speeds lower than this, so we aren’t exactly sure who this is helping. In fact, the highest speed limit in the United States is only 85 mph. Those speeds only legally occur in Texas, in the middle of nowhere.

The smart speed control technology will be paired with geofencing. This automatically inhibits speed when traveling around hospitals, schools and in densely populated locations.

This is just the beginning of safety technology offered by Volvo. We recently reported on the Driver Monitoring Cameras that will be offered starting this year. As tech continues to evolve and change, we can only expect that car companies plan to continue providing new features.

In today’s technological world, consumers continue to trade privacy for the sake of convenience. So, it makes sense that automakers would continue to jump on board with some of the latest technologies. The question is – would you be willing to give up some more of your privacy if it meant your on-road safety increased? That’s what Volvo wants to know as they pursue adding driver monitoring cameras to future cars – but just as an option.

What are Driver Monitoring Cameras?

These in-car cameras will only first come as an option, later in 2019. Yes, at first glance it does sound completely invasive. However, Volvo assures consumers that the entire program is aimed at benefiting drivers.

Despite the fact that they are optional equipment, Volvo is confident all drivers will want to incorporate them. Engineers from Volvo go as far to say that it might be the best option of 2019.

Of course, they aren’t the only automaker venturing into more technology. GM has the Super Cruise, which is a Level 3 driver-assist feature. Any automaker that’s not on board with technology will be soon, even if it isn’t with driver monitoring cameras.

The driver monitoring cameras work by watching the driver’s biometrics. It’s capable of monitoring glucose levels through the pupil scan. Then, that data works with the car and alerts family members or a hospital if a health problem seems imminent.

In addition, these cameras detect high-stress levels. It alters the settings of the car to help drivers relax on their daily commute home. Basically, the goal of the cameras is to predict and stop health emergencies before they occur.

Future of Driver Monitoring Cameras

This is just the beginning. As technology continues to advance, drivers have access to more features. Eventually, there could become a way to video conference for passengers. It could also be used to identify a driver and match the operating settings they prefer. Imagine getting in your car and having the climate controls set just right while your favorite radio station turns on.

It will be interesting to see what cars this software comes in first. Maybe it will be in the new 2019 Volvo all-electric XC40 this year.
