Even though John Cena wasn’t supposed to sell his 2017 Ford GT for two years, it recently scored $1.3 million at Mecum Dallas. This isn’t the first time John Cena’s 2017 Ford GT was up for sale. In fact, it’s been quite the long saga.
John Cena’s 2017 Ford GT
This car has been in a wild game of hot potato since Cena received it. Just a bit over a month ago, John Cena’s 2017 Ford GT sold for $1.435 million in an auction out of Monterey, California. If the past tells us anything about the future, it’s possible we’ll see it for sale again soon.
Ford chose a few hundred people to receive the 2017 Ford GT for $460,000. They all were required to keep the car for at least 24 months. Cena decided not to wait but proceeded to sell his car almost immediately after delivery. It’s actually changed hands five times since its arrival.
That’s when Ford sued New Autos Inc. and John Cena for breaking their agreement. Both of the lawsuits were settled and Cena’s GT was free from the agreement. The reason that New Autos Inc. got involved was because they purchased the car from another dealership, probably the one Cena sold it to. Then, they delivered it to another customer. That driver racked up 600 miles on it before opting to sell it again because of back issues.
That’s when it ended up in Monterey, California on the auction block. After selling for $1.4 million, it found it’s way back to the auction site in Dallas. This car seems to make its way from auction house to auction house, so it should be interesting to see the next step it takes.
Would You Pay that Much?
We know the Ford GT was a limited edition that only a handful of people had the chance to buy, but would you pay that much more for one? Considering they sold for $460,000, it seems a little crazy that they are now fetching more than $1.4 million!
We assume this is what Ford was attempting to discourage by forcing owners to keep the car for two years.
