You’ve just purchased your new IKEA bookshelves and you’re waiting for delivery. Interestingly, you’ll be interested to know that there are some new delivery vehicles coming in the future. IKEA is looking toward using electric vehicle delivery in some major cities worldwide.

Electric Vehicle Delivery

This Swedish home goods and furniture company stated that they plan to make future home deliveries through other methods. The first locations to receive this include Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, Shanghai and New York. Their plan is to incorporate zero-emission and electric vehicles by 2020.

These five markets make up 25% of IKEA’s deliveries in the world. That takes out a big chunk of emissions and sets the standard for other companies in the future to start electric vehicle delivery as well.

It also shows that they are on track to reach the goal of having all home deliveries done through EV by the time we hit 2025.

While there’s no word yet on when the company plans to introduce the new fleets, we expect to find out more as time goes on. The problem for IKEA is that there aren’t many fleets to choose from because no automaker offers an all-electric commercial van. Nissan does have the NV200 overseas, plus there’s a Mercedes-Benz e-Sprinter that offers a range of 93 miles. The downside is that the e-Sprinter hasn’t set a U.S. launch date yet, so we will have to wait and see.

Not the First Company

IKEA isn’t the first company to embrace the future. If you live in London, you’ve probably seen the new line of UPS trucks rolling down the streets. Even though it looks like a typical delivery vehicle, when it reaches the hub at night, it’s plugged into the smart grid. This allows it to charge enough that drivers can travel up to 150 miles each day.
