The Subaru Outback has always been a mystery. It’s basically a wagon version of the Legacy sedan with the looks and competence of the modern crossover. It was designed for people who don’t want to be in a crossover but still desire the functionality of one. Besides the Outback’s uncommon place in the market, it still holds the record for being Subaru’s best selling vehicle in the nation. Subaru fans continue to rave about the excellent interior quality, the responsive steering and the great ride despite it being an older design. Get ready though because Subaru is introducing this new-generation of Outback to compete with its competition. Keep reading to learn about the awesome features of the new 2020 Subaru Outback.
Stronger Construction
All newly designed models come on the Subaru Global Platform. The Legacy and Outback are no different. With the new global platform, there will be more strength in the chassis and body. The heavy-duty connections between the body parts will make this possible. What this means is greater handling and ride quality plus less vibration and noise in the passenger compartment. This is exactly what we have seen in the new Forester and Impreza that just moved to the new global platform. So with that in mind, we expect better ride quality and handling than it’s older counterpart.
New Look
Don’t hold off if you are searching for a more exciting looking model than this. Subaru has no plans in the future to have anything bolder than the current model. Subaru is known for only making small changes to their body styles from year to year. That is also what we expect from this model too. The Outback will receive some revisions like a resigned front end that will be similar to the Ascent and Forrester. They also plan to increase the cabin size to make it roomier.
Under the Hood
There are 2 engine options for buyers right now. The 1st is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 175 hp with 174 lb-ft of torque. The 2nd option is a 256 hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder that produces 247 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Outback will be dropping the six-cylinder for fuel efficiency reasons.
The new Outback might use the current 2.5-liter engine but may bump up the horsepower a little more than it is now. Subaru will also install direct injection since their goal is to upgrade all the new models with this. If you take a look at the Forrester, it received the direct injection in 2019. This increased the output 12 horsepower and gave it 2 more 2 lb-ft of torque.
If Subaru decides to replace the six-cylinder with the 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder, you could see an improvement in fuel economy and horsepower.
All-wheel drive will continue to be a standard option on the Outback. We also expect the 2020 Subaru Outback to include with an exclusive CVT.
When will the 2020 Subaru Outback be Available?
We are expecting the new 2020 Subaru Outback to arrive in dealerships sometime next year.
The current Outback model starts at just $27,320, but most likely prices will increase for the new generation. Compare the 2019 Forrester price of $25,270 to the $24,710 price tag for the older model. That will give us an idea of what may happen with the Outback.
