You might think you’ll be able to go to your local bicycle dealer and find the newest Schwinn E-Bike, but that’s not the case. In fact, it will only be available in one place – Amazon.com.
New Schwinn E-Bike
The Schwinn Vantage is part of the adventure series. It comes equipped with mid-motors and batteries. Schwinn currently sells some bikes on this platform, but the latest Vantage FXe model and the RXe will remain Amazon exclusives. You won’t be able to buy them at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart or Sports Authority.
The Schwinn Vantage FXe comes with a Line Cruise drive system from Bosch Performance that produces 250 watts of power. It also offers pedal-assistance until 20 mph. Schwinn lists the retail price at just under $3,500.
The Schwinn Vantage RXe also uses the Line Speed drive system from Bosch Performance but it produces 350 watts of power. In addition, it offers pedal-assistance to 28 mph. The company lists the retail price of this bike at just less than $4k.
Both of these models are currently available in the United States for purchase. Eventually, Amazon might offer them in Europe as well.
Trouble with European Sales
The difficulty with selling the Schwinn E-Bike in Europe is E.U. regulation EN15194. It states that all e-bikes have to come with pedal-assist only. What this means is they can’t have throttles. Aside from that, the battery assistance must cut out at 15 mph.
Under their regulations, the RXe is a speed pedelec. This fast e-bike requires plates, a helmet and a driver’s license to ride.
Still, if Schwinn were smart, they would attempt to find a way into the European market. It’s a critical time for e-bikes in that region. In fact, there are more electric bikes sold now in The Netherlands than there are traditional bicycles.
